What Causes Dandruff ? ( 1 of 2 )

Dandruff or flaky scalp can be a social turn-off. When writing for this article, it reminds me that I used to have dandruff when I was in my teenager age, around 13-15 and I don't seem quite remember on how I got it last time and then got rid of it. What causes the dandruff ? Some people feel that a lack of hygiene causes dandruff, but no........ this is far from the truth.

A survey in US shows that more than 60% of the adults have a dandruff problem, which is closely related to highly active sebaceous glands. This is particularly common among young people. It is generally believed that only dry scalp has dandruff, however dandruff in oily scalp is associated with dust, grease and other particles stuck together which are not visible to the eye.

Dandruff is a common scalp condition that occurs when dead skin is shed, producing irritating white flakes, the thing that drops on your shoulders when combing. It is usually a condition of oily, rather than dry, skin and occurs as skin cells renew themselves and the old cells are shed. Some people tend to generate and discard skin cell at a faster rate than others. Recent research shows that severe cases of flaking scalp, usually associated with seborrhoea ( a type of dermatitis ), may be caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Pityrosporum Ovale, which lives naturally on the skin.
